Safety Spotters

If you train alone in your home gym, squat rack safeties can add an important layer of protection to your setup. Spotter arms, safety straps, and flip-down safeties are designed to catch or support the bar if you miss a rep, giving you a backup when there isn’t another person there to spot you.

Rack safeties are especially useful for exercises like squats and bench press, where getting pinned under a loaded bar can turn a missed rep into a bigger problem. Set your safeties at the right height for each movement so you can train hard while giving yourself a safer way out when a lift doesn’t go as planned.

Spotter arms mount to the uprights of a squat rack and extend out from the rack to help catch the bar during a failed lift. They’re a popular choice for open squat racks and wall-mounted setups where you want added protection without enclosing your lifting area.

Safety straps and flip-down safeties are typically used inside a full cage or power rack. Safety straps create a flexible catch point for the bar, while flip-down safeties provide a rigid surface between the rack uprights. The best option comes down to your rack, the way you train, and your personal preference—but all three are designed to give you more confidence when pushing through heavy sets.

Start with your rack. Safety spotters need to match the dimensions, pin size, and design of your specific squat rack, so compatibility should always come before choosing a style. PRx offers safety options for Profile® and Build Limitless® racks, including solutions for folding squat racks and full cages.

Once you know which safeties work with your rack, think about the lifts you perform and where you need protection. Spotter arms are a natural fit for open rack training, while safety straps and flip-down safeties can provide protection inside a full cage. Whichever style you choose, take the time to position and adjust your safeties correctly before you lift.

Heavy training comes with heavy responsibility. Build your setup to handle both.
