What Are the Benefits of Sled Training?

Weight sleds bring strength and conditioning together in one seriously simple piece of equipment. Load up your sled and use pushes, pulls, drags, and other movements to challenge your legs, glutes, core, and upper body while getting your heart rate up at the same time.

Sled training can fit into strength workouts, conditioning sessions, athletic training, or a quick finisher when you still have a little left in the tank. Adjust the resistance to match your workout, then focus on putting force into the ground and keeping the sled moving. Whether you’re training for strength, speed, endurance, or overall work capacity, a weight sled gives you plenty of ways to put in some serious work.

Should I Choose a Push Sled or Pull Sled?

Push and pull sleds challenge your body differently, and the right choice depends on how you want to train. A push sled lets you drive forward against resistance, putting your lower body and core to work while giving you an easy way to adjust intensity by changing the load. Push/pull sleds give you even more versatility by letting you change direction and movement without switching equipment.

A pull sled uses a harness or strap so you can drag resistance while moving forward, backward, or laterally. That makes it easy to work sled drags into lower-body training, conditioning, and athletic workouts. Want both? Choose a sled designed for pushing and pulling so you can change up your training without adding another piece of equipment.

Are Weight Sleds Good for Strength and Conditioning?

Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages of a workout sled is how easily it can scale from strength-focused work to fast-paced conditioning. Add more weight and focus on powerful, controlled pushes or pulls for a serious strength challenge, or lighten the load and pick up the pace to work on speed, endurance, and conditioning.

Sleds are also easy to work into circuits, intervals, and full-body workouts alongside your other home gym equipment. Push for distance, pull for time, add short sprints, or finish a lifting session with a few trips down and back. There’s no complicated setup and no shortage of ways to make it harder.
