Jeff's Dynamic Spare Room

Jeff's Dynamic Spare Room

We have a big blended family—7 kids, 6 grandkids, 2 sons-in-law, and 2 great-grandparents—all within 10 minutes of our house.

We originally built the room for our teens to use for homework, video games, and hanging out, but it didn’t take long to realize the whole family would rather have a gym. We’ve never regretted that choice!

We started with the PRx PRO rack, barbells, bumpers, and dumbbells. PRx was incredibly helpful and responsive from the beginning. The build quality, shipping, and support have been top-notch. Over the years, we’ve added gear tailored to the kids—treadmill for our runner daughter, slam balls and kettlebells for the HIIT fans, a heavy bag for our fighter, and a Peloton for my wife after her hip replacement.

We love keeping the space open for family yoga, breathwork sessions, and get-togethers. Shirley and I especially enjoy when the grown kids come over to work out—it means we get to play with the grandkids while they train. Everyone wins.

One of my favorite gym memories: Super Bowl Sunday 2024. My son had just returned after being away too long. At halftime he turned to me and said, “I’m not really into this game. Want to work out?” We skipped the second half and had one of the best workouts ever.

We love our gym—and the way it brings our family together.

Unique Additions

A couple months ago, our family decided we wanted weight stacks and a functional trainer. I went straight to PRx to see if they had something that would work for us. I love the half rack functional trainer. It allows for tons of cable exercises while still allowing the front rack for barbell work.
We opted against the foot stabilizers and opted to secure the base into the floor and made brackets for the top to anchor into the wall. The rack doesn’t move at all.
